Tzedek Hillel: GW Hillel’s Community Service Program

TzedekGW Hillel is committed to the Jewish values of tzedaka (righteousness), gemilut chasadim (acts of loving kindness) and tikun olam (repairing the world). As one of 30 Tzedek Hillels around the US, the GW Jewish community concentrates on working with the DC community and the university to tackle issues such as poverty, homelessness and education - all with a decidedly Jewish flavor.

Tzedek Hillel is an international public service effort sponsored by Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life and is dedicated to transforming life on campus and in the community.

TzedekTzedek Projects include:

  • Fulfill Your Sole - Students partner with ComfortOne Footwear and Naot to provide DC Central Kitchen job training graduates with brand new shoes! Hundreds of pairs of shoes have been donated during the last few years.
  • Miriam’s Dialogue - An award-winning program that brings together GW students and faculty with members of the Foggy Bottom homeless comunity to discuss short stories, poetry and life philosophies.
  • Miriam’s Kitchen - A team of dedicated GW students heads to this soup kitchen one morning a month to help out those who are in need of a hot breakfast.
  • Buzzing 4 Change - The whole GW community comes together to shave their heads, cut their hair and raise $ for children who are dealing with cancer. Over $40,000 has been raised during the last two years.
