Your adventure at GW is going to fly by fast and GW Hillel is here to help you make the most of your 4 years. So, grab a camera, grab a friend and get ready for the ride of your life.
Shabbat
GW Hillel offers three concurrent student-led Friday night Shabbat services (Reform, Conservative & Orthodox) every Friday night during the school year starting at 6:30 pm. Services are always followed by a fantastic Shabbat meal and a P.S. (Peulat Shabbat or Post Shabbat) program.
The GW Campus
GW has two primary campuses – the Main Campus in the Foggy Bottom area of Washington, DC, and the Mount Vernon Campus, about a 10 minute drive from the main campus, also in D.C. Hillel is located in the Main Campus area.
The Main Campus is an “urban campus” – that is, it is not an enclosed campus. University buildings and dormitories neighbor government buildings, businesses and private homes – creating a vibrant, electric atmosphere. For a map of the GW campus, click here.
The main student union is called the Marvin Center, which holds a food court (no kosher outlets), grocery market (some kosher meat and products), a bowling alley, student group offices and meeting spaces.
GW has a number of athletic teams – the basketball teams play at the Smith Center, directly accross the street from Hillel. Want to play instead of watch? Visit the Lerner Health and Wellness Center, GW’s beautiful new “gym”.
The DC Community
GW is located in the historic Foggy Bottom neighborhood of D.C., about a 10 minute walk from the Georgetown area. Washington offers much to see – from museums to monuments, sporting events to senate hearings, theater to talk shows.
The campus is only a five minute walk to the world-famous John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and only a Metro ride away from the MCI Center, home of the Washington Wizards and Washington Caps as well as numerous concerts.
The DC Jewish Community is a vibrant one as well. The District is the home to several synagogues and Temples, a fantastic JCC and two kosher restaurants. The surrounding suburbs of Rockville and Silver Spring, MD, as well as Northern Virginia, support many more synagogues, temples, JCCs, kosher restaurants and day schools.
