How many Jewish students are there on campus?
What is Jewish life like at GW?

There are approximately 2,800 Jewish undergraduates at GW, approximately 30% of the campus population. Jewish students are an active, dynamic part of both Hillel and the campus community. They are motivated, diverse, and passionate about the work they do outside of the classroom. There are many opportunities for students to become involved with Jewish life - from cultural arts to Israel advocacy to social justice to religious life - and students are also encouraged to pursue their own innovations and ideas.

How connected is GW Hillel to the University community?

Hillel is integrated into the University community through its dynamic programs, co-sponsorship of events, and the involvement of active students in many other University groups. The University is very supportive of Hillel and its role on campus and works hard to provide a welcoming atmosphere for Jewish students, faculty, and families.

What kinds of student programs and groups does Hillel sponsor on campus?

There are a wide variety of student groups sponsored by GW Hillel, reflecting the wide range of student interests and affiliations. Programs range from Hebrew and Arabic classes to move nights, guest speakers, trips into DC, holiday celebrations…and much more! Students are encouraged to pursue their ideas, take the initiative, fill leadership roles, and get involved with existing projects and groups.

What kinds of Shabbat programs do you provide?

There are three student-led Shabbat evening services each week - Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox. Services are followed by dinner (usually about 120 - 150 people). Several times a semester, we host Peulat Shabbat (Post Shabbat) programs with speakers or discussions following dinner. Saturday mornings, students sometimes get together for services but they always come to Hillel to relax and eat lunch.

Is there a Kosher Meal Plan on Campus?

No. However, GW now offers kosher groceries in the District Market in the Marvin Center. Additionally, Eli’s Restaurant is just a 15 minute walk from campus and accepts GWorld cards!

What is the Judaic Studies Department like at GW?

The Judaic Studies department is a growing and dynamic part of the University with respected and interesting faculty members. The department offers a variety of classes, including Hebrew, history, literature, and others.
