Fireside Chats Discussion Series 0

Fireside Chats is a program designed to bring fifteen passionate members of the Jewish comunity together to join in a round table discussion with prominent decision makers of our time.

Topics during the first semester will include Israel and the UN, Israel and the Media, and the rescue of Jews from the former Soviet Union.

Who is it for?

Highly motivated students interested in learning the behind the scenes actions concerning Israel in the international arena. Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to apply.

Who is Going to Be Speaking?

October 18 – Eric Rozenman is the Washington director for CAMERA — the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America. His duties include monitoring U.S. and overseas news media Middle East coverage — in particular of Arab-Israeli subjects; writing for and editing CAMERA publications; liaison with members of the media, Congress, and other public and community representatives; and public speaking. Prior to joining CAMERA, Rozenman was, from 1997 to 2002, executive editor of B’nai B’rith’s International Jewish Monthly magazine and senior speech writer. His freelance journalism on U.S. and Middle East subjects has appeared in newspapers and journals including The Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jerusalem Post, Washington Post, and Middle East Quarterly, Policy Review, and The American Enterprise Online. He is author of the novel Total Jihad, published by RavensYard Ltd.

November 16 – Ambassador Richard Schifter is a Graduate of the College of the City of New York, summa cum laude and the Yale Law School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and thereafter with the U.S. Military Government for Germany. Ambassador Shifter practiced law in Washington, DC before beginning his distinguished career in the field of foreign policy. Ambassador Schifter served as U.S. Representative in the UN Human Rights Commission, Deputy U.S. Representative in the UN Security Council, with rank of Ambassador, Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs under both President Reagan and President Bush, and served as Special Assistant to the President and Counselor on the staff of the National Security Council, under President Clinton as well as Special Adviser to the Secretary of State.

November 30 – Ambassador Max M. Kampelman is a lawyer, diplomat and educator. From 1985 to 1989 he served as Counselor of the Department of State and Ambassador and Head of the United States Delegation to the Negotiations with the Soviet Union on Nuclear and Space Arms in Geneva, before rejoining the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson. “Mr. Kampelman serves as Chairman Emeritus of the American Academy of Diplomacy, Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and Freedom House. He also serves as Counselor of the American Bar Association Committee on Law and National Security and the ABA’s Special Committee on the Central and Eastern European Law Initiative, designed to provide assistance to the emerging democracies of Europe.
